FROM THE CRITICS Publishers Weekly Andy Warhol looms larger than Alfred Stieglitz over this survey of contemporary photographers, who tend to be more preoccupied with popular and commercial imagery than traditional fine art photography. With their digital manipulations and cinematically constructed narratives, many of them unabashedly embrace flashy artifice over sober documentation. Not that Bright, a former curator of the National Portrait Gallery in London, tries to categorize the messy vitality of contemporary photography into any clearly labeled trends. She divides the 80 mostly British and American photographers into seven thematic chapters that allow for wide latitude. "Portraits," for example, includes both Zwelethu Mthethwa's straightforward images of South African migrant workers and Gillian Wearing's photos of herself dressed as several of her own family members. While Bright's own commentary follows the ponderous style adopted by curators everywhere, she gives equal room to the words of the photographers themselves, who often provide insight without even trying. Cindy Sherman, whose 1980s photographs of herself masquerading as movie stars and historical characters set the stage for much of the work in this book, says, "I didn't know where [my art] was coming from. Library Journal Books on contemporary art photography may seem to be clogging the market, with more new titles appearing every month, but in the hands of an experienced curator like Bright (director, Assoc. of Photographers Gallery, London), discriminatingly adjudicated anthologies of works by first-rate photographers continue to merit consideration. Roughly 80 trendy photographers, Nan Goldin, Tina Barney, and Philip-Lorca diCorcia among them, contribute to this volume. As is often the case in this genre, photos trump the text, which consists of brief, uncritical commentary by Bright juxtaposed with artists' quotations. The photos are lumped into broad categories-"Portrait," "Landscape," "Narrative," "Object," "Fashion," "Document," and "City"-and the layouts, which sport up to three different typefaces and type sizes per page, can be jarring. What sustains the book are the photos themselves-a stunning selection of engaging and challenging portraits and scenes by leading artists that will keep readers turning pages until the end. A serviceable bibliography lists general sources and individual artists' monographs. A companion purchase that contains more probing texts by the artists themselves is the recent Photography Speaks: 150 Photographers on Their Art, edited by Brooks Johnson.
