This reference for diagnosing and treating medical and psychological disorders has been a standard for more than a century. In the present revised and updated edition, to which 300-plus medical doctors have contributed content reflecting the latest research and reports of clinical experience, 34 new chapters cover critical-care medicine, biological warfare, terrorism, SARS, and bird flu. Two color diagrams and appendixes showing the metric system, centigrade-to-Fahrenheit equivalences, and the trade names of commonly used drugs have also been added. Some information, such as injuries and the medical aspects of travel, has been rearranged in chapters on "special subjects" rather than being dispersed throughout the text. Between three and five thematically organized pages are devoted to each of the entries. According to the Merck web site (www.Merck.com), an online version of this edition will be posted in August, with users able to request email updates. Bottom Line The Professional Guide to Diseases (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005. 8th ed.) also covers diseases and conditions, but this information quickly becomes outdated. The Manual, made handier by the thumb tabs, is essential for academic and health libraries.-Margaret K. Norden, Marymount Univ., Arlington, VA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information. Loading...
