FROM THE CRITICS Library Journal This book, which offers a history of photography (with an emphasis on fine-art photography) since its invention more than 160 years ago, is divided into chapters by types of photography, e.g., "Architecture & Still Life," "Portraiture," "Exploration," "Photojournalism," "Pictorialism & Earlier Art," "Early Twentieth-Century Art," "Art Photography Since World War II," "Fashion & Advertising," and "Photography & Science." Though its organization and design are a little confusing, art historian Hoy (photography, NYU; Fabrications: Staged, Altered, and Appropriated Photographs) provides an engaging, detailed, and well-researched text throughout this substantive work. Leah Bendavid-Val (ed., Through the Lens: National Geographic's Greatest Photographs) also contributes a useful foreword that sets the context. This book is strikingly illustrated with the fresh, interesting, and carefully selected images of more than 250 photographers. The back matter includes some helpful information, notably a time line of the history of photography and biographies of noted photographers. Sidebars elaborate on the art's human and technological aspects. This solid history of photography is recommended for all libraries, especially where there is interest in serious photography.-Raymond Bial, First Light Photography, Urbana, IL Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
