FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD, MD (Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)Description: This is a comprehensive textbook of phlebotomy. Purpose: The purpose is to provide accurate, current and practical information on phlebotomy procedures along with phlebotomy theory and principles. The authors have succeeded in this worthy goal. Audience: This book would be useful for all phlebotomists, other healthcare workers performing phlebotomy (e.g., respiratory therapists, nurses, etc.), phlebotomy supervisors, phlebotomy students, and phlebotomy instructors. Pathologists and clinical laboratory scientists may also find it useful in better understanding the key role of phlebotomy in clinical laboratory testing. Features: The book starts with general principles and theory of phlebotomy. Particularly nice is the discussion of the various regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA, CLIA, JCAHO) and incorporation of their regulations into good phlebotomy practice. I particularly enjoyed the emphasis on customer service, with detailed information on how patients should be approached, how telephones should be answered, legal issues to be considered, etc. The chapters on general anatomy and physiology and the circulatory system seemed too brief and superficial for me, but are in fact written at an appropriate level for a phlebotomist. I was also intrigued with the chapter regarding point of care testing and the seemingly glaring lack of discussion regarding the many regulatory requirements for its performance. (This could simply reflect my California-centric perspective, in which phlebotomists can perform POCT only under very limited conditions.) I very much appreciate the accessible writing style, and the excellent use of color (photos, text). Throughout, the text is punctuated with key learning points, handy mnemonics, and provocative case studies. Assessment: This is a great comprehensive textbook on everything you might want to know about phlebotomy. I will certainly use it for developing a phlebotomy didactic curriculum to assist my phlebotomists with meeting the new California phlebotomy regulations that go into effect this January (2003).
