FROM THE CRITICS

Gail Morgan

This book is an updated edition of patient care for the imaging technologist. The previous edition was 1993. This publication covers major topics, including safety, vital signs, medical and surgical asepsis, pharmacology, and special procedures. The intent of this book is to educate the radiology student in the ever-expanding field of patient care. This edition updates current information and includes a wide range of topics that are critical for good patient care. Radiology students are the targeted audience for this publication; however, it is an excellent reference for educators and registered technologists as well. This text features excellent illustrations and diagrams that are easily followed. The expanded area of pharmacology in this book gives additional information that is extremely important in the complete scope of patient care. I found this text to be extremely thorough and well written. Each chapter in this edition is organized and follows a logical sequence. The illustrations are well done and enhance the text. The critical thinking questions at the end of each section encourage the reader to use their problem-solving skills. The topics in this book that could have been covered in greater detail were tuberculosis and hepatitis; although HIV was discussed in detail, these were not. After reviewing this book and evaluating its educational material, I've found it to be a valuable source of information. I plan to use this edition for the main text in my patient care class.

Reviewer: Gail E. Morgan, RTR (Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital)Description: This book is devoted to covering all aspects of patient care in the field of radiologic technology. The chapters include long standing techniques used in the profession, as well as updated information necessary to provide good patient care. The previous edition was published in 1997. Purpose: The purpose is to educate radiologic technology students in patient care. In this field of technology it is important to have a reference and to include all the ever changing material necessary to produce a qualified professional. This book serves as an excellent guide and has updated and added pertinent information that is relevant in today's job market. Audience: This patient care book is written with the radiology student in mind, according to the author. The material, however, is of value to all radiologic technologists as well. In an ever changing field, keeping abreast of current techniques and changes is important to everyone. The author has been updating her textbook on a regular basis over the past 25 years. Features: The material covered in this textbook ranges from professional responsibilities to all aspects of caring for patients. The various chapters include specific information on emergencies and trauma, infection control, age specific training, pharmacology, legalities and several chapters on basic nursing techniques as well. In this edition an extended chapter on EKG interpretation has been included along with a more in-depth look at pharmacology. This edition highlights warnings in bold red captions throughout the chapters. These warnings are easy to see and follow and are extremely important to heed. Assessment: This is an extremely worthwhile reference. I have used this book's fifth edition for my patient care class and intend to change to the 6th edition because of the continued updating and increased material necessary to educate students in proper patient care.
